Discover How Our In-House Investigator Helps Prevent Surprises in Court

|

When you face a criminal charge, you do not just need a lawyer. You need a team that knows how cases really work in the field, in the investigation room, and in the courtroom. One of the ways Monroe Law, P.A. sets itself apart is by having something most criminal defense firms do not: a seasoned, in-house investigator who lives and breathes case work every single day.

In our Key Differentiator video, our investigator Luis Lopez shares how his decades in law enforcement and at the State Attorney’s Office now fuel the defense strategies we build for our clients. His story shows, in plain terms, what it means to have an investigator sitting inside the firm instead of on the sidelines.

Why an in-house investigator changes your defense

Most people assume every criminal defense firm uses investigators the same way. Luis makes it clear that is not the case. As he explains in the video, “Most law firms do not have an in-house investigator.” At Monroe Law, P.A., we made a different choice. We built investigation into the heart of our work so we can look at every case from the ground up.

Luis brings a rare mix of real-world experience to that role. In his words, “I was very blessed when I was in law enforcement. I got to do a lot of different things, so I worked trauma homicide investigator. I worked in the academy for many years, training pretty much for ten years. I did all the traffic and DUI training and all that for this area, so I know that subject very well.” He also served “for the State Attorney's office as their investigator, for a bunch of years.”

Those years in uniform and inside the prosecutor’s office now help us see how a case developed, where holes may exist, and what questions still need answers. Luis describes how all those “different hats” put him in a place where he has “fast knowledge” of the files that come across his desk, and that “there's not too many cases that we come across that I haven't seen before.”

Preventing the one thing no client wants to see in court

Across the video, one line from Luis stands out. He says, “One of the things I tell my clients this all the time is, the worst thing that can happen is the attorney get surprised by something, you know, by the state or by the court.”

His job focuses on avoiding that moment. Luis puts it in simple terms: “I make sure that the attorney has everything that they need for court.” He spends his time digging through what the state turned over, what law enforcement did or did not do, and what may still sit beneath the surface.

He explains, “My job is to make sure that whatever is there that we haven't uncovered, that the client hasn't said yet, that kind of get to the bottom of everything that's going on in this case, so that the attorney has a clear picture.” That clear picture helps us walk into negotiations and hearings ready to address what the prosecution may present, instead of scrambling to react.

What Luis brings to every case that comes through the door

In the video, Luis talks about how he approaches each file that lands on his desk. He says, “What I bring to the table is, again, I've been experienced as a law enforcement officer, retired 20 years as a trainer in the area. All that gets brought into the table, so every case that comes in here, I'm going through with a fine tooth comb.”

That “fine tooth comb” idea captures the way we view investigation at Monroe Law, P.A.. We do not treat it as a box to check. It is a constant process that runs alongside the legal work. Because Luis works in-house, he can walk into the attorney’s office, talk through a new report, or flag something that does not line up with his knowledge of how things usually unfold out on the street or inside an agency.

When you watch the video, you will see that this is not theory for him. Years of homicide work, DUI and traffic training, and time in the local academy give him a grounded view of how officers write reports, how evidence moves through the system, and where misunderstandings can creep into a case file. That background supports the careful investigation we bring to each matter we handle.

A law enforcement background with a human focus

Another powerful thread in the video is how Luis views the people behind the case numbers. He says, “I love the fact that I can still help people just, you know, in a different way. Because everybody that gets arrested is not a bad person. I mean, sometimes we make mistakes, so it's not like, hey, I committed a crime, I'm a bad person. There are so many different variables.”

That mindset aligns with how we approach defense at Monroe Law, P.A.. We do not see a file as just charges and statutes. We see a person who may feel overwhelmed, worried, and unsure about what comes next. Luis describes it this way: “I love the fact that wearing this hat, I'm still able to help people and a lot of times help them through our worst days.”

That human focus matters for investigation, too. When clients sit down with Luis, he does not just look for facts to plug into a form. He listens for details, context, and life history that may change how we see the case. That deeper story often guides what we look for in discovery, what questions we ask, and how we frame events when we stand up for our clients.
